Rooted in ʻāina -
Nurtured by community.

Lehua Community Birth Center is a locally-led initiative to develop Hawaiʻi’s first nonprofit, licensed freestanding birthing facility and wellness center.

A place where:

Our families receive relationship-based care

Community-based providers can serve sustainably

Students can learn and cultivate their unique offerings

Our
Purpose

Along with lichen, mosses, and ferns, ‘ōhi’a lehua is among the first living things to take root on new lava. It’s growth creates soil, shade, and shelter for other flora and fauna. The landscape shifts and an entire ecosystem can celebrate that first blossom.

We chose this name because it reflects what we believe about this work. Lehua Community Birth Center (LCBC) is being cultivated by and for the people of North Hawai’i. What takes root here will grow to contribute a sustainable resource within an existing network of cultural and health heritage, well-established community-based providers and essential medical institutions.

North Hawaiʻi has the knowledge, the calling, and deep roots needed to support a midwifery run freestanding birthing facility. LCBC is committed to provide community-developed options for our families, providers, and the next generation. Let us grow together.

Our Services

Lehua Community Birth Center will be an open-model facility. Support staff will be available 24/7 for clinical services, classes, labor, birth, postpartum care. Local providers will have the option to apply for admitting privleges or to sublease space. Until the staff is fully credentialed and integrated into reimbursement structures and a license is obtained for the facility, LCBC is providing enrichment classes, mental health programs, and launching programs to support Hawai’i-based students as midwife assistants and midwifery students.
